What I Almost Missed
Seven photographs. One city. A million ways to see it.
I thought I was taking pictures of New York.
But I think I have always been looking for something else.
The moment the city catches itself in a puddle. Light finding its way through broken glass. A man flying across a bridge like no one could possibly get in his way. A woman dancing above the river. A mother holding her child close while the whole city moves around them.
These are the moments that stop me.
Because somewhere inside all this concrete and steel, all this rushing and reaching and trying to get somewhere, there is this terribly beautiful business of being alive. We move. We fall. We hold on. We let go. We find the light. Sometimes we are the light.
These seven photographs are pieces of New York as I have seen it — strange, tender, gritty, funny, beautiful, human.
Maybe they are also an invitation.
Look again.
There is almost always more there.
